Surah Yusuf #86

“He said: ‘I only complain of my anguish and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know’.”

Ya‘qub declared that he used to relate his grief, his need, his life problems and his difficulties to Allah in the dark of night and in private time;

“He said: ‘I only complain of my anguish and my grief to Allah, “

This means:  “I didn’t intend your sympathy.  This just came out.  I don’t need your comments and your analysis. I am only complaining to Allah (subhanahu wata’ala).”

It is as if he is mocking their analysis of him, and he uses a word that is very harsh but it is true in that

“I know that I’m mumbling all the time.  I know that I am always talking about Yusuf, but I’m not doing it for you.  You don’t have to listen.”

“And my grief is only to Allah.  I am doing it for Allah (subhanahu wata’ala).”

This also shows us that complaining to Allah is a sign of iman.

A lot of us have an incorrect concept of this issue.  What does it mean to complain to Allah?

Complaining to Allah means you bring out Allah’s sympathy by talking about your situation.

This is something that is completely permissible because who else with sympathize with you other than Allah?

Who else will show you mercy other than Allah?

The sign of iman is to complain only to Allah and not to others.  You don’t want their sympathy.

You are allowed to complain to Allah in a positive manner.

What is a positive manner?

You don’t question the Wisdom of Allah.  Questioning the Wisdom of Allah is off limits.

Complaining means you express your grief to Allah, and you try to elicit sympathy from Allah by your miserable state and not by what Allah has done.  This is what complaining is, and this is what Ya‘qub is doing here.

An example of this is:  “O Allah, you see my state.  O Allah, you see finances are difficult and I have a family to feed.  O Allah, only You can save me from this situation.”

This is complaining to Allah, and it is part of iman.  You do it to Allah, and you don’t do it to the rest of the creation.

“I only want Allah’s Mercy.  I know from Allah (subhanahu wata’ala) that which you do not know.”

What does he know?

He knows that Yusuf must be alive.

Notice that we know that Allah did not inspire Ya‘qub for a Wisdom known to Him.

Allah did not inspire Ya‘qub about where Yusuf is, but he remembers the dream of Yusuf, and he believes that Allah must fulfill that dream.

He has iman in Allah.  This is a test of his iman:

“Do you believe or not?  You have seen the dream, and you know the dream, will you believe this will happen or not?”

We can estimate that for maybe forty years, he has not heard one whiff of Yusuf.

But rather he knew that Yusuf  was still alive, but he did not know where he was.

Does he have faith in Allah that Allah has protected his son as he saw the dream?

He does have faith, and he says,

“I am certain.  I know from Allah that which you don’t know.”

Authentic Tauheed

who were responsible for their father’s blindness.. : they were

— if a Muslim boy is taking drugs, and the mother became sick with high blood pressure, who is responsible

— the boy with his evil deeds : when the sons of Yaqub saw him going blind with sorrow for losing Yusuf
— they became guilty;

Reflection

  • Complaining nullifies beautiful patience (if you’re not accepting what is there for you )
  • Ya‘qub complains only to Allah and not to people
  • Beautiful patience makes person beautiful even with old age
  • What does he know that they don’t know?
  • Because of the dream of Prophet Yusuf, he has interpreted that one day they will be together again, prostration of stars are the brothers and the mother and the father are the sun and the moon

Messages to Note “

  1. A monotheist shares his secrets and his hidden troubles only with Allah.
  2. The best action in this regard is to take one’s complaint to Allah.
  3. There lies in a dialogue or a discussion with Allah such a great pleasure which cannot be understood by ordinary people.
  4. Superficial people usually pass by events easily. However thoughtful people follow events until their outcome in the Hereafter.

Lesson

  • Don’t keep your anger and your frustrations locked up inside.

So whom do I take this anger out on, my wife? My kids?

Well this is what Prophet Yaqub (Peace be upon him) did: “I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah.”

Yes complain to Him, He will listen and He will reward. Until then be patient.

  • Try to hold in your anger. A person, who believes in Allah, will only complain to Allah
  • Of the wisdom that we learn is that complaining to Allāh is actually a sign of īmān if it is done properly, and complaining to the people is not a sign of īmān.  Ya‘qūb says, “I complain of my situation to Allāh.”

Surah Yusuf #85

“They said: ‘By Allah! You will never cease to remember Yusuf until you are ill or (until) you are of the perished ones.”

Tafseer

As we said last time, tallahi, wallahi, wa billahi are all ways you can give an oath to Allah, and you use each one in a different context, which is a bit advanced.

This is clearly not the politest thing to say, and this shows that not all of the brothers have reached the level of the eldest,

so some of them in their frustration and exasperation say something not very polite, and it is in fact rude.

They say to him, “Are you never going to stop thinking of Yusuf?

You are going to go crazy thinking about him.”  Haradha means ‘to start blabbering / you are going to lose your head / you are going to become senile with old age.’

The stress of Yusuf will cause you to go mad, or you will perish in this grief.  It will cause you to die.”

They get a little bit irritated that “We are just telling you about Binyamin.  We are telling you about the eldest, and you are still going back to Yusuf.  When will you stop thinking about Yusuf?”

Again, this shows us how Allah ‘azza wa jall tested them with the exact opposite of what they intended.

They intended one think and in a way Allah punishes them by increasing the love of Yusuf, and he can never stop thinking about Yusuf.

Reflection

‣ The brothers say they’re afraid he’s going to remember Yusuf until he grows old or until he passes away
‣ They use talahi=possibility

Explanation

1. The ideal love is spiritual and the heavenly sighs of grief which are of valuable import. The thinking of the men of Allah is identical with the thinking of Allah Himself.

2. The issue of paternal love is different from ordinary kinds of love.

3. Spiritual and psychic problems leave their impact on the body, among which one can name the separation from a loved one which might cause a nervous break-down or even death

Lesson

Your parent’s love is true love.

Surah Yusuf #84

“And he turned away from them and said: ‘Alas for Yusuf!’ And his eyes became white with the grief of that he repressed.”

And he turned away from them…”

He turned away.  He doesn’t know what to do.  He will not get any sympathy from them, so he turns away.  He wants privacy.  He wants solitude.  He says something he doesn’t intend for them to hear because Allah says, “Wa tawalla ‘anhum…” but he says it from his heart, and it just comes out, and so they hear it.

And he says, ‘O woe to me, how my grief is for Yusuf. ‘”

Notice subhanAllah that he has just received word that Binyamin and the eldest are missing.

Who does his heart go out to?  Way back twenty-five, thirty-five years.

Look at the love he has for Yusuf.

The memory of the other two
sons has in fact invoked the memory of Yusuf, subhanAllah.

Isn’t it amazing that the brothers thought that by getting rid of Yusuf their father’s love would be given to them.  It did nothing but increase his love for Yusuf.

SubhanAllah this shows us that when we commit a sin thinking that it will bring about some type of good, this is the classic delusion from Shaytan.

When you commit a sin saying, “Okay, just one time this will happen and Allah will forgive after that,” that sin will get the exact opposite of what was intended.

They wanted to do the sin in order to make Ya‘qub forget about Yusuf.

Allah punished them bymaking the exact opposite happen, and that is that Yusuf overtook his heart,

so much so that when he just hears that the other two sons are missing, he is sad but his heart goes back to Yusuf.

“And his eyes became white because of grief.”

Some scholars have interpreted this to mean that he became blind.

Allah knows best, but it doesn’t appear to be that he became totally blind, rather it appears that his eyesight became weak and literally white.

If Allah ‘azza wa jall had wanted to say that he became blind, He would have said ‘became blind.’

But rather, He used the word ibyadhdhat, which means ‘became glazy, became white.’

This most likely shows, and Allah knows best, that he didn’t actually become blind.

Fahuwa kadheem.”

Kadheem comes from kadhama which means ‘to cover up, to hold back.’  Allah praises those who can hold back their anger.

Allah is saying his eyes became white with grief.

Allah describes Ya‘qub as ‘he has concealed, he has protected, he has not shown his grief.’ Allah praises him for not showing his grief and for controlling his emotions.

Why?

Of the perfection of one’s faith in Allah is that you don’t turn to others for their sympathy.

You turn to Allah (subhanahu wata’ala).  This is a part of perfection that you don’t go begging from other

What benefit is it if somebody gives me his pity?

In fact, it is humiliating for my iman at that level to get pity of these people.

What is their pity going to do to me?
If I feel good when other people pity me, then I have not put my trust in Allah the way that He deserves.

When you get to this level – and understand that it is not a sin to not be at this level;

this is a person who is a prophet of Allah – then you cut off hope of any good from humanity because their good will not benefit you.

Notice that expressing grief by crying is not going against sabrun jameel because Allah describes him as having beautiful patience,

but he is still crying, so much so that his eyes have gone white.

To cry or to show some natural emotions between you and Allah (subhanahu wata’ala) and not doing it to get the sympathy of the people,

but it just happens, this is not wrong and doesn’t go against the perfection of iman.

They should cry the most when they are making du’a to Allah for forgiveness.

Here we are talking about crying for the sake of grief and we say that this is in fact a sign of iman and does not show any weakness in iman.

He turns away and he says,

“O my woe, O my grief for the sake of Yusuf,”

and he loses his sight or his sight becomes white, and he tries to suppress his sorrow and his grief.

Reflection

‣ Crying doesn’t beautiful patience because it shows you’re turning to Allah in sincerity
 • The more in need you are in Allah, the more likely you are to turn to Allah
• He lost all hope in everything EXCEPT Allah
‣ He doesn’t complain to others, but cries until he becomes blind

Lesson

It is a sign of īmān to always think the best of Allāh ‘azza wa jall and to have the best thoughts of Allāh and to never lose hope.

At least thirty or forty years have gone by and Ya‘qūb has gone blind in his grief, but his faith in Allāh only increases and never goes down.

Those who are close to Allah are the most severely tried by Him (swt). So if you are facing any trial in your life then take glad tidings at the fact that this very well could mean that Allah is pleased with you.

Allah wants to bring you closer to Him (swt) through that trial.

So do not ever think that your difficulties and your pain are because of your sins.

It may well be that Allah wants to raise you in rank and bring you closer to Him (swt).

Just as you console yourself by reminding yourself of how others like you have gone through such trials,

He (swt) has not given you a trial so severe like He (swt) gave to Yaqoob (AS). Yaqoob (AS) was not only a man, but he was also a prophet and the head of his family.

So you should be thankful to Allah (swt) that He (swt) did not give you a trial as great as this.

Surah Yusuf #83

“He (Ya‘qub) said: ‘No, but your (guilty) selves have made a matter fair for you, so patience is good. Maybe Allah will bring them to me all together; verily He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.”

Tafseer;

Ya‘qub is excused for saying the exact same phrase he used for Yusuf.

I know my son.He is the most righteous amongst you.  He would never steal.
There is no way he would steal. He is certain that something else is going on.

He knows that something is beyond his understanding, so once again he says, You have all done something.

I don’t know what it is, and I don’t understand what you have done.

You have the whole town talking and the whole caravan on your side.  I don’t understand, but I know my son is not a thief.”

Rather, you have all come together to do something in your minds.  You have plotted a plan.  As for me, I will have a beautiful patience.”

Once again this is the same phrase:
“fasabrun jameel. “

Just like last time, we say this shows us that patience is of different types.

You can have a low patience or a mediocre patience, which is good and that’s ok, but the best patience is sabrun jameel – the most perfect patience or the most beautiful patience.

What is the most beautiful patience?

Now we will find out.  This is the description of the most beautiful patience.

“I hope, I am optimistic.”  In English, we will say insha’Allah – that is how we say it.
“I am optimistic that Allah will bring all of them.”

There are three missing kids:  Yusuf, Binyamin, and the eldest.

The scholars say that after Yusuf and Binyamin, his favorite was the eldest, and this also shows he was the most righteous.

So his three most favorite sons are now all out of his sight, and his optimism is so high that he says,
“I hope all three of them will come back to me.  Verily, He is the One who is the Most Knowledgeable.

He knows what He is doing.  He knows why this is happening, and He is Al-Hakim (Wise).

I trust His Judgment and His Wisdom.  He has a wisdom I don’t understand, so He knows why this is happening, and He has a wisdom that I don’t understand.”

Now what does he say?

“My optimism is so powerful, insha’Allah Allah will return all three of them.”

This shows us what true faith does to a person.  Faith (iman) in Allah (subhanahu wata’ala) causes you to be optimistic, and it is a sign of iman to be optimistic.

Ya‘qub never loses optimism in Allah ‘azza wa jall – he loses optimism in his sons, and he has given up of all good from them, but in Allah (subhanahu wata’ala), it only increases.  SubhanAllah – to put it in a very blunt manner – the more the mu’min is tested and tried, the more he reads in positive into what is happening.

Reflection

‣ Ya‘qub says to them the same words he told them already when they didn’t return with Yusuf
‣ Ya‘qub says “Indeed, surely this is something that you yourselves have made up, and I will have beautiful patience
‣ He still has hopes however that all of them will come back
 • What is giving him those hopes?
– Part of beautiful patience is having hope in Allah and putting your trust in Allah Verse

Lesson

The key to making it through
this life is patience and the key to patience is our relationship with Allah.

Islam is nothing but our relationship with Allah.

This remembrance is what will help us to make it through this life and all of the trials that this life contains.

Never give up on your prayers. Never stop making dua if a response does not come immediately nor can we question as to why the response is not coming.

We have to keep praying to Allah and know that He (swt) hears our prayer.

We have to realize that He (swt) loves us and that He (swt) has a Wisdom in not responding immediately.

Yaqoob (AS) ends his prayer to bring back his children by saying “surely He is the Knowing and the Wise”.

Here he reminds himself of these two Names of his Lord.

Allah Knows every single thing with the most perfect and complete of Knowledge, and He has the most perfect Wisdom.

So whenever you make dua to Allah then remember these two Names.
      “KNOWING and WISE”
Because Allah Knows how desperate we are in need of what we are asking for.

Allah knows our need more than we ourselves know it.

He is also Wise in that He Knows when is the best time for Him to give us what we are asking for.

Remember that in justice and in fairness, if you were in any way deserving of what you are asking for, and if what you are asking for is truly what is best for you then In sha Allah you will get it.

But you will get it when Allah Sees it fit for you to have it. Allah Knows and we do not know, Allah is Wise and we are not.

May Allah help us to realize this! May He help us to always remember these Names of His (SWT) whenever we call out to Him.

Surah Yusuf #81

“Go back to your father and say: ‘O’ father! Verily your son has committed theft, and we did not bear witness except to what we knew, and we were not guardians of the Unseen’.”

Tafseer

In this ayah as well we find pearls of wisdom come from the tongue of this ‘big’ brother.

This shows us how much he has changed.

He has changed from a selfish and jealous boy who only cared for himself to a man who now realized the purpose of his existence.

See here how Allah can guide even the darkest of hearts?

First, he reminds his siblings to return to their father – return to where they came from.

We can take a lesson from this for our lives as well.

We too should return home in times of difficulty and trial. When matters become difficult, we should always go back to where we came from.

At home, there is solace. At home there is peace. At home, there is the support of the family.

At home, there is a chance to regroup and rejuvenate.

Then tell your father that his son has surely committed theft.

The word “surely” is for emphasis and certainty. Of course, Yaqoob (AS) would find it hard to believe that his son is a thief.

This brother witnessed with his own eyes the cup being pulled out of Binyamin’s bag.

So the evidence that he had witnessed clearly indicate that Binyamin was a thief.

He tells his father here that he does not know anything more than that.

Allah Knows best if Binyamin is truly a thief or not.
He only knows what he has seen with his eyes.

It is as if he is saying “o my father, I know that you find it hard to believe that Binyamin is a thief. All that I am telling you is what I saw. Allah Knows best”.

Reflection

Scholars have said “wa ma shadidna”
• What got them into the problem from the beginning?
– The ruling
• We didn’t know that Ben Yamin was the one who was going to steal
• We just testified according to the ruling

Lesson

  1. All parents always think the best of their children. They find it hard to believe that their children would ever do anything. Of course, we should always think the best of our children, and we should always pray that they be righteous, but at the same time, we should remember that they are human and it is the nature of the human to sin. We must keep in mind that our child is human and humans can sin.
  2. Knowledge is gained by studying the world around us. Any thought or any idea that we adopt has to be based on what we sense.
If we have not sensed something then it just imagination.
  3. When we believe something that someone else tells us we have to believe it on how likely it is that such a person is speaking the truth and how much we trust that person.

Based on the kind of person who they are and whether or not they are known for speaking the truth, we must make the judgment.
